Usual adult dose

Usual adult dose: 500 mg every 6 hours, taken 1 hour before food, usually for 5 to 7 days for skin infections. Finish the full course. Injection dose is set by your doctor.

Your doctor may give you a different dose. Children's doses depend on weight.

Side effects

Common

diarrhoea
nausea
mild skin rash

Serious — get help

Stop taking it and see a doctor straight away if you notice:

severe allergic reaction
yellow eyes or skin
severe or bloody diarrhoea

Do not take it, or take care, if

Allergy to penicillin or any penicillin-type antibiotic
Liver problems (use with caution)
Severe kidney disease (dose may need to be lowered)

Can lower the effect of warfarin; INR should be checked during the course.

Pregnancy

Category B

No risk seen in animal studies, but there are few studies in pregnant women. Usually considered safe when needed.
